Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
