Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
