Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
