RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
